Entity
An entity is a distinct thing a search or AI system recognises and holds information about, such as a specific company, person, product, or place.
In full
In search and AI systems, an entity is a uniquely identifiable thing: a particular company, person, place, product, or concept, distinct from the words used to describe it. Modern systems do not merely match strings of text; they attempt to resolve which real-world entity a page is about, then reason about relationships between entities. This resolution is assembled from structured data on your own site, consistent descriptions of you elsewhere on the web, and references from sources the system already trusts. Entity clarity is the degree to which a system is confident about what your organisation is. Ambiguity is expensive, because systems avoid recommending things they are uncertain about.
Why it matters
Before an AI assistant can recommend a business, it needs a confident understanding of what that business is. A company described three different ways in three places is a company the model hedges on.
