The .nz domain is New Zealand's country-code top-level domain, administered under policies set by InternetNZ and overseen by the Domain Name Commission. Registration at the second level, meaning names such as example.nz, opened in September 2014 alongside the long-established third-level options such as .co.nz and .org.nz. Unlike Australia's .au, there is no New Zealand presence requirement: anyone eighteen or over, or any lawful entity anywhere, can register a .nz name, and there is no requirement to host it in New Zealand. Transfers use a UDAI, a sixteen-character authorisation code that expires after thirty days.
Why it matters
A .co.nz domain is a meaningful trust signal for New Zealand customers. Note also that .nz offers a free privacy option for individual registrants only; a business cannot hide its registration details, and no paid third-party WHOIS privacy exists for .nz.
