NZBN

Also known as: New Zealand Business Number

An NZBN is a unique 13-digit identifier for a New Zealand business, issued as a GS1 Global Location Number.

In full

The New Zealand Business Number is a unique 13-digit identifier assigned to New Zealand businesses. It is issued as a GS1 Global Location Number, which means it is an internationally recognised identifier rather than a purely domestic reference. Registered companies receive one automatically, as do GST-registered sole traders, partnerships, trusts, and body corporates; others can opt in free of charge. The NZBN register is public and offers a free API allowing search, retrieval, and watchlists that notify you when another business's registered details change.

Why it matters

Because an NZBN is a GS1 Global Location Number, the technically correct way to publish it in Organization structured data is the globalLocationNumber property rather than a generic identifier field. The free API also makes live business verification possible in supplier onboarding or checkout forms, which is a genuinely New Zealand-only capability.
